Mission Statement

My name is Evan Ortiz, and this site contains the culmination of my studies in Education and Letters & Modern Languages. I wish to share my experiences whilst working on my degree and how they have prepared me to pursue full-time work as an ESL/EFL teacher. I pride myself on my adaptability and empathy. I have worked on learning about different methods of teaching, learning styles, and accommodations that I must make to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Growing up, I was only taught English, which made me feel out of touch with my Puerto Rican family on my dad's side. I want to become fluent in Spanish and am fascinated by languages and language learning. I want to pursue a career in EFL teaching to use my teaching skills and to be able to travel and be exposed to different cultures, and hopefully learn more languages in an immersive environment.

I originally became interested in teaching in my senior year of high school, when I volunteered and assisted my favorite math teacher in her classroom. I taught lessons, helped her create and grade assignments, and tutored students in small groups or one-on-one. My teacher taught me about the requirements and work that must be done by teachers to meet state standards and reflected on her teaching experience and why she is passionate about her job. I found the work I did to be incredibly fulfilling, and decided I wanted to pursue a degree focusing on education to forward my career path.
